Connecting Our Vets: The Veteran Employees and Allies ERG
Dennis McCaffrey, senior vice president, strategic sales management, is a United States Marine Corps veteran and leads the XPO Veteran Employees and Allies Employee Resource Group (ERG).
We’re proud of our sizable veteran community within XPO Logistics – more than 2,000 of our team members have self-identified as veterans. One of the ways we’re trying to serve our veteran community is through the creation and implementation of our XPO Veteran Employees and Allies Employee Resource Group (ERG).
It’s great timing that the launch of this ERG in May coincides with Military Appreciation Month, which is a fantastic opportunity to recognize current and former service members across all the branches for their service to our country.
Until recently, there wasn’t a way to connect our employees from a number of our diverse work groups. With the creation of our ERGs, we’re able to recognize and connect employees with similar backgrounds, interests and cultures. We’re launching ERGs for employees that identify as Black, multicultural, LGBTQ+, women, working parents, Hispanic and Latin origin and employees with disabilities, plus their allies.
As our Veteran Employees and Allies ERG grows, it will help our veteran employees feel more connected. It’s also a great opportunity for XPO to learn how to engage with, integrate and recruit veterans.
Our veterans have amazing life experiences with leadership and teamwork skills that can be shared. If we build on our sense of camaraderie, it’s going to help the greater XPO community across the world.
We’ve already shown that our teammates enjoy embracing our military veterans. For Veteran’s Day 2020, we distributed challenge coins to all of our self-identified veterans. It was an awesome moment, and I could really feel a sense of belonging there.
The military teaches you about discipline and teamwork. Whether you go into sales or any other role at XPO, you must build strong teams to accomplish the mission and you must have the discipline to stay focused on the objective. We work together every day to overcome obstacles in our path and strive forward as One XPO. It’s no surprise that veterans do extremely well at XPO. We are very honored to have them.
