National Hispanic Heritage month started yesterday, and I’m excited for this opportunity to proudly celebrate our colleagues of Latin American descent.
Signed into law as a celebratory week by Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968 and extended into a month-long recognition by Ronald Reagan, NHHM celebrates the contributions, diverse cultures and rich histories of the Latin American community in the United States.
NHHM gives us the chance to learn more about Latin American history and reflect on the countless contributions that Latin Americans have made and continue to make to our country. It’s also appropriate that the commemoration starts and ends when it does in order to celebrate the independence days of several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico and Chile.
I’m proud that we’re a company that celebrates diversity and inclusion. Our company is built on collaboration; we respect and value the diverse backgrounds that each of us contributes to XPO and that makes us stronger together. Over the next month, we’ll introduce you to several colleagues of Latin American descent and hear their stories about their families, heritage and careers at XPO. Recognizing NHHM is part of our continuing effort to live our Inclusive value and recognize the contributions of all employees. This year, we started to recognize honorable months – we honored National Black History in February through contributions to civil rights museums; in March, for National Women’s History, we highlighted female pioneers in the transportation and logistics industry; and in June, we participated in the NYC Pride march. On November 11, we’ll pay tribute to our employee veterans.
In the end, these commemorations are just touchstones. It’s how we live our Inclusive value everyday—the respect we have for each other as individuals – that makes our culture so strong.
